Buying the right office chair

Buying the right office chair

Being in office from 9 to 5 can be a tedious task for anybody. Working in an office naturally means sitting for longer period of time. Sitting continuously in one position adds stress to the structure in the spine and results in back and neck pain. Therefore, to avoid developing back problems, it's very essential to have office chairs that are ergonomic and supports the body especially the spine and neck and promotes good posture.

Some points to be considered before buying an office chair are:

  • Back - The office chair should support the natural curve of your spine and provides support to the back. It should be high enough to give support to your shoulder and neck region, while allowing for flexibility and movement even when you are sitting. Ergonomic chairs should also have a recline function in their back rest to allow for reclined sitting, when the hip to back angle is greater than 90 degrees. The backrest of an ergonomic office chair should be 12 to 19 inches wide. An ideal chair should be adjustable in height and angle.
  • Height - Office chair seat height should be easily adjustable. An ergonomic chair should be adjustable in height so that anybody can sit comfortably with their feet flat on the floor and knees at a 90 degree angle and parallel to your hips. Buying a chair with pneumatic adjustment lever will give the users a relaxed seating posture. A seat height that ranges from about 16 to 21 inches off the floor should work for most people.

  • Armrest - If you have a job that demands sitting in front of the desktop or a laptop for a long period of time, you should keep your arms in a rested position. Therefore the office chairs should have adjustable arm rests so that the person using the chairs can adjust the height accordingly.
  • Seat Material - It is preferable to buy fabricated chairs with padding to comfortably sit for long period of time. The seat and the back should be well cushioned to give a relaxed seating posture. Mesh seating allows air to pass. It will keep body heat and moisture level of the body in control. Chairs with molded foam adjust to the shape of the body.
  • Swivel - Chairs should allow free movement in your work space. A perfect office chair should easily rotate so that one can reach different areas of the office desk without straining too much.
