Art Noveau

The term Art nouveau is a French term and it means new art. It is also known as Jugendstil and is an international philosophy and style of art especially decorative art. It may also refer to architecture and applied art and was developed as a reaction to academic art. The art form gained huge popularity during 1890-1910 and the philosophy believed that art is a way of life and cannot be taught or learnt.

Art Nouveau is considered a total art style, embracing architecture, graphic art, interior design, and most of the decorative arts including jewelry, furniture, textiles, household silver and other utensils and lighting, as well as the fine arts. According to the philosophy of the style, art should be a way of life.

The major inspiration of Art Nouveau is nature, but not the pretty side of it. It was more towards the terrifying side. The other inspiration was the local history and women. Art Nouveau designers were interested not only in the vitality of nature, but also in the life cycle, which of course included decay and death.
