Ikat is a design which is commonly found in dress materials, rugs, bed sheets etc. It is formed by binding bundles of threads with a tight wrapping which is applied in the desired pattern. The threads are dyed in various colors. The bindings may then be altered and the thread bundles dyed again with another color to produce elaborate, multicolored patterns. When the dyeing is finished, the bindings are removed and the threads are woven into cloth.
Ikat is commonly used in Indonesia and also south Asia and India. The various types of Ikat are warp Ikat, weft ikat and double ikat.
